Originally called INFERNO Gallery and opened in 2006, it is housed in the Vulcan Studios in East Oakland, CA. The building was an old iron factory that produced a product called R-MOR EDGE. In honor of the building’s history as a place of burning fires and its location in nether region of Oakland we chose to name the gallery INFERNO in reference to the first portion of the great poet Dante Alighieri’s literary work “The Divine Comedy.”
The gallery is a simple L-shaped layout of 700 sq. ft. INFERNO would like to thank collector Glynda Cotton for the 60’s Sputnik chandelier that graces the gallery’s interior as well and artist Gary-Paul Barbosa Prince for the door that inhabits the gallery walls.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Gary-Paul Barbosa Prince was an American expressionistic artist and filmmaker who created work laced with references to pop, religion, sexuality, politics, and folk art. He worked in a variety of evolving styles creating imagery that challenges viewer’s personal, political and cultural sensibilities.
He was the founder of INFERNO Gallery and was one of the founding Board Members for BridgeMakerARTS ; a non-profit gallery and arts community center in Richmond, CA. He passed away in January 2020.
